Exit Interviews: A Great Way to Learn Areas of Improvement
While it’s not always ideal when a team member decides to leave your company, it still offers a valuable opportunity to collect information about the inner workings of your business from another point of view. In most cases, the employee has provided at least two weeks of notice, so this allows you time to schedule an exit interview and get their honest feedback, since they have nothing to lose by expressing their truthful opinion of their overall experience. This process can grant you an insight to uncover issues that you may not be aware of – and ultimately, the chance to improve the processes, culture, and retention of current and future team members. Here are some questions to ask during the exit interview to gather further insight.
What prompted your search for a new job?
This question allows you to determine an exiting employee’s ultimate motive. Did they feel like they were not appreciated, did the company culture not fit, or did they enjoy their work but another company simply offer them more money, advancement opportunities or bonus incentives?
What could we improve moving forward?
Asking this direct question collects prime intel on where some areas of opportunity may lay within your company or organization as a whole.
Did you feel any concerns you brought forward were properly addressed?
Knowing whether the current processes you have in place are being followed – and are actually effective – is an important part of building a solid foundation within your business.
Is there anything that may change your mind about leaving?
Depending on how integral the employee is, this question could be asked right away upon receiving their notice. If you want to keep a key member on your team, don’t be shy in asking how you can get them to stay.
The above questions are just a small sample of questions; there are plenty of other queries that can help you use an exit interview to your advantage.
