Financial Controller


Location: Vernon, BC

Salary: $130,000 - $150,000 per year

Our client located in Vernon is seeking a progressive Financial Controller to join their leadership team in beautiful Vernon, BC.As the Financial Controller, you will be responsible for overseeing the financial operations of the company (both Canada and US divisions), while managing and coaching a team of high performing individuals. Ensuring accurate financial reporting, reviewing quarterly and annual budgets, and managing accounting transactions are all key components of this role. Given the nature of the business and the growth opportunity present, this is an exceptional role for an individual currently working as a manager or senior manager within public practice to start a meaningful career within industry.

As the successful candidate with in-depth knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and foundational experience within auditing and assurance, you will develop accounting policies and oversee all financial procedures within the company. Ultimately, you’ll ensure compliance with accounting regulations, maximize profits and mitigate risks.

Responsibilities:

  • Prepare and present timely and accurate financial statements and reports.

  • Analyze financial data to identify trends, variances and driving continuous improvements in collaboration with internal and external stakeholders.

  • Oversee the chart of accounts, general ledger, and month-end closing processes, ensuring alignment with the company's growth trajectory and maintaining financial data integrity.

  • Manage the consolidation of diverse entities and cross-border intercompany transactions to streamline financial operations.

  • Ensure compliance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), IFRS and other relevant regulations.

  • Manage ERP, and financial reporting systems, ensuring they meet the needs of the business.

  • Prepare company working papers, and audit packages.

  • Work closely with department heads to develop realistic budgets aligned with strategic objectives.

  • Monitor budget performance and conduct variance analysis, identifying areas of concern and recommending corrective actions as needed.

  • Oversee day-to-day financial operations, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, and general ledger management.

  • Design, implement, and monitor internal control systems, utilizing a risk-based approach to identify and address key control points.

  • Implement corrective measures as necessary to enhance control effectiveness.

  • Develop, communicate, and uphold robust accounting policies and procedures to bolster internal controls and support business operations effectively.

  • Conduct regular audits and reviews to assess the effectiveness of financial controls and identify areas for improvement.

  • Prepare and file accurate tax returns, including corporate income tax, sales tax, and other regulatory filings with internal and external parties.

  • Cultivate strong relationships with external auditors, and other stakeholders to support financial transparency and regulatory compliance.

Requirements:

  • Professional Accountant designation (CPA) required.

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, Finance, or a related field.

  • Strong knowledge and application of GAAP, ASPE and/or IFRS.

  • US GAAP exposure/knowledge.

  • Experience with Audits and Assurance.

  • Exceptional technical proficiency, including advanced skills in Microsoft Excel, financial modeling, and ERP systems.

  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.

  • Strong interpersonal skills, capable of maintaining professionalism and composure in stressful situations.

  • Effective communication skills, with the ability to engage with stakeholders at all levels and build strong working relationships.

  • Exceptional organizational abilities, including time-management and attention to detail.

  • Ability to work effectively under pressure and meet tight deadlines.

  • Demonstrated aptitude for critical thinking and analytical problem-solving.

The position offers an excellent total compensation package!
